North Carolina and Wake Forest Played a Thriller in 2012; And Will Face Off Again This Fall

North Carolina and Wake Forest Played a Thriller in 2012; And Will Face Off in a Rematch This Fall

The 2013 ACC football schedule has officially been released, meaning we finally have some clarity as to whom the conference’s 14 teams will face-off with from week-to-week next season. So with that in mind, we thought it would be an entertaining undertaking to rank all 112 ACC football games for 2013 because, well… it’s the offseason.

Today, we take a quick glance at numbers 40 through 31; which are (once again) almost entirely made up of in-conference matchups. For the non-conference games that are featured, however, there are varying levels of intrigue — either for the novelty of the two teams playing each other, or even the hope that the two schools could (should) become rivals in a very liberal sense).

#40: Maryland Terrapins at NC State Wolfpack (Saturday, November 30)

#39: NC State Wolfpack at Duke Blue Devils (Saturday, November 9)

#38: Nevada Wolf Pack at Florida State Seminoles (Saturday, September 14)

#37: Syracuse Orange at Northwestern Wildcats (Saturday, September 7)

#36: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at BYU Cougars (Saturday, October 12)

#35: Virginia Cavaliers at Miami Hurricanes (Saturday, October 26)

#34: Clemson Tigers at NC State Wolfpack (Thursday, September 19)

#33: Pittsburgh Panthers at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (Saturday, November 2)

#32: Miami Hurricanes at North Carolina Tar Heels (Thursday, October 17)

#31: Duke Blue Devils at Wake Forest Demon Deacons (Saturday, November 23)

Some additional notes on today’s list:

  • The 10 games appear on 10 different dates
  • Breakdown of non-conference opponent leagues: Big Ten (1), Independent (1), MWC (1)
  • Breakdown of non-conference opponent home states: Illinois (1), Nevada (1), Utah (1)
  • Public vs. private universities: one public, two private

Florida State vs. Boston College Was Ugly in 2012, Will It Be a Repeat in 2013?

So with that in mind, we thought it would be an entertaining undertaking to rank all 112 ACC football games for 2013 because, well… it’s the offseason.

Today, we take a quick glance at numbers 90 through 81; the first group in our countdown made up entirely of FBS opponents. Just one conference game in this collection, and it’s only there because of how lopsided the result’s likely to be.

#89: Ball State Cardinals at Virginia Cavaliers (Saturday, October 5)

#88: Marshall Thundering Herd at Virginia Tech Hokies (Saturday, September 21

Pitt's One of Several ACC Schools That Scheduled A Few Less-Than-Stellar Opponents

Pitt’s One of Several ACC Schools That Scheduled A Few Less-Than-Stellar Opponents

Today, we take a quick glance at numbers 100 through 91; wrapping up FCS opponents, along with a smattering of terrible FBS teams. As part of the conference’s continuing PR battle, the volume of cupcake opponents actually goes a long way. In the past, teams have fallen victim to difficult slates devoid of “easy” matchups — something every school looked to avoid this year.

#100: Old Dominion Monarchs at Pittsburgh Panthers (Saturday, October 19)

#99: Idaho Vandals at Florida State Seminoles (Saturday, November 23)

#98: Boston College Eagles at New Mexico State Aggies (Saturday, November 9)

#97: Richmond Spiders at NC State Wolfpack (Saturday, September 7)

#96: Florida Atlantic Owls at Miami Hurricanes (Friday, August 30)

#95: New Mexico Lobos at Pittsburgh Panthers (Saturday, September 14)

#94: Duke Blue Devils at Memphis Tigers (Saturday, September 7)

#93: Old Dominion Monarchs at Maryland Terrapins (Saturday, September 7)

#92: Villanova Wildcats at Boston College Eagles (Saturday, August 31)

#91: Tulane Green Wave at Syracuse Orange (Saturday, September 21)

Some additional notes on today’s list:

  • Old Dominion, which is in the process of upgrading to the FBS, appears on this list twice (and once yesterday as well); a result of playing as a FCS independent
  • Of the 10 opponents (nine different teams), four are from the FCS and six are from the FBS
  • The 10 games appear on eight different dates, including three on Saturday, September 7
  • Breakdown of opponent conferences: Conference USA (3), CAA (2), FBS Independent (2), FCS Independent (2), Mountain West (1)
  • Breakdown of opponent home states: Virginia (3), New Mexico (2), Florida (1), Idaho (1), Louisiana (1), Pennsylvania (1), Tennessee (1)
  • Public vs. private universities: Seven public, three private

ACC Officially Releases 2013 Football Schedule

After a Long Wait This Offseason, the ACC's 2013 Football Schedule is Finally Released

After a Long Wait This Offseason, the ACC’s 2013 Football Schedule is Finally Released

FINALLY! After a long wait and a lot of shuffling around, the ACC has released its complete 2013 football schedule. No real surprises, though it’s interesting that both NC State and Florida State have bye weeks prior to facing Clemson. Also strange that Syracuse would schedule Wagner for its final out-of-conference opponent, considering that the Seahawks do not count toward the Orange’s bowl eligibility (the Northeast Conference does not offer the minimum 57 scholarships).

Rather than posting the entire schedule in one long, arduous article, I wanted to highlight the league’s Thanksgiving weekend games as an additional point of conversation. As SB Nation’s BC Interruption has noted, the ACC’s final weekend scheduling could use a bit of improvement, so I was curious what the scheduling office has done to remedy that situation. A look at that weekend’s slate of games:

November 29

Miami at Pittsburgh

November 30

Boston College at Syracuse

Clemson at South Carolina

Duke at North Carolina

Florida State at Florida

Georgia at Georgia Tech

Maryland at NC State

Virginia Tech at Virginia

Wake Forest at Vanderbilt

You can head over to the .pdf above (or head here for the logo view) to view the full schedule. Any additional thoughts; good or bad? Consider the comment section an open thread for everything schedule-related.

ACC 2013 Spring Practice & Spring Game Schedules

Football's on the Horizon... Spring Practices Start Next Week!

Football’s on the Horizon? The ACC’s Spring Practices Start Next Week

This year’s spring practices and games bring with them some feeble hope that maybe we can get through the offseason with some sanity left, especially as conference realignment rumors continue to come in waves. While we don’t want to bill these early glimpses at the 2013 season as anything more than what they are — practice sessions and scrimmages — it’s still worth keeping an eye out for a glimpse of some of the trends we may notice at the onset of the regular season. Below we’ve included dates for the start of spring practices for each ACC team, as well as spring game dates. We’ll be compiling previews for spring practice next month too, so be sure to check back for those.

Boston College Eagles — Practice Begins: February 28 | Spring Game: April 13

Clemson Tigers — Practice Begins: March 6 | Spring Game: April 13

Duke Blue Devils — Practice Begins: March 4 | Spring Game: April 13

Florida State Seminoles — Practice Begins: March 20 | Spring Game: April 13

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets — Practice Begins: March 25 | Spring Game: April 19

Louisville Cardinals — Practice Begins: March 20 | Spring Game: April 13

Maryland Terrapins — Practice Begins: March 2 | Spring Game: April 12

Miami Hurricanes — Practice Begins: March 2 | Spring Game: April 13

NC State Wolfpack — Practice Begins: March 19 | Spring Game: April 20

North Carolina Tar Heels — Practice Begins: March 6 | Spring Game: April 13

Pittsburgh Panthers — Practice Begins: March 5 | Spring Game: April 12

Syracuse Orange — Practice Begins: March 19 | Spring Game: April 20

Virginia Cavaliers — Practice Begins: March 18 | Spring Game: April 6

Virginia Tech Hokies — Practice Begins: March 27 | Spring Game: April 20

Wake Forest Demon Deacons — Practice Begins: March 19 | Spring Game: April 20

Some stray observations:

  • Eight teams hold their respective spring games on April 13.
  • Another five hold theirs on April 20… let the 4/20 jokes commence (what, we’re not doing TCU jokes anymore?).
  • While alphabetically, the schedule starts out pretty uniform — similar start dates and spring practice days — it obviously takes a turn before simply ending up all over the place. There is where an ACC Network would help. Take a look at the Pac-12′s spring schedules; everything’s uniform, and every game’s televised.
  • Boston College is the only school to start in February; and Virginia wraps up earliest, with an April 6 spring game.
